Calling all Victoria Large Cent collectors! I am conducting a census of the Victoria large cent varieties identified in the Charlton Standard Catalog, 65th edition on pages 269-348. The intent of the census is to lay the groundwork to establish and continue to update over time, three things;

Relative scarcity of a particular variety
Grade spread
Top 10 known by grade

Sounds like a good idea, Dan! I constantly buy and sell and so I do notice what coins are easier to get and which are hard. But that won't help your census. But one of the things I do know is that the 1891 varieties are much more available than the general collecting public thinks and are in need of a major price correction.

tamarin, There are several of the varieties that are not scarce but desirable non the less because of the feature. A good example form 1891 would be the long serif T on page 330 and another would be the 1881 triple N in REGINA on page 305. Both dramatic, both easy to see without a glass but not that hard to come by if you are on the hunt for them.

Dan, you're right and you've pointed out something critical to the survival of a variety as a collector-must-have. If a variety is not visible to the naked eye, but it has to be confirmed by a loupe, it's in trouble.

Reminder on the Large Cent Census. Information continues to come in. If you have intended to participate and have not yet, lots of time yet. The more that participate the tighter the data set. Thanks again to all those that have sent in their information.
