I decided a few days ago to start a circulating Jefferson nickel set and went to the bank to get two boxes. I think that the stars were aligned because I'm halfway through the second box and I am missing only 18 coins. 8 of those amoung the missing are in the top 10 key dates and those do include 2009. So currently I'm pessimistic about finding any of those coins except in a coin shop. I intend to keep looking.

I suspect that Jefferson nickels are the only coins in the world where you can put together a 50-year run out of circulation. Being only 18 coins short of a 74-year set after just a few days should leave you feeling optimistic, not pessimistic. Now you are reaching the point in the hunt where patience and persistence are your friends.

Believe it or not, your results are typical for that series. It really can be pulled from circulation. I'm down to just 5 holes myself, all from circulation.

Great fun can be had from searching bank rolls for Jefferson nickels ... I need only two coins ... 1938-S and 1943-D. Keep up the seraching ... and let us know how you are doing. David

I keep seeing people who put together close to a complete set of Jefferson's in two or three boxes from the bank. Makes me want to give it a shot. Sounds like it would be fun.

I have a couple more boxes to go through. I'm not going to to quick to purchase any of these coins. Out of the top 10 key dates I actually already have the 1938d, 1955, and 1950 coins. I have enough to keep me busy among my hobbies.

I probably went through close to 100 rolls so far and I'm mostly just missing modern recent S mints and some keys. Not bad at all for just buying a few rolls here and there from the bank. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of War Nickels still in circulation. My best pull from a roll to date is a 1949 S/D

My granddaughter and I only have 4 holes left and we started last fall. The thing we like now are the surprises like funding proofs (2 so far) and the extra silver nickels. One of the proofs she found was in a roll I got from the cashier at Wendy's. When she saw that shiny coin she let out a yell because she knew what it was. Not bad for an eleven year old. Another example is the 1966 with much of the pony tail missing. She looks for the dates and any oddities while I look for the coins better than what we currently have.
