Poll Question
An interesting thing popped up today. I was reading about my 1812 set in the other forum and a guy asked if I was going to send some of the coins like the penny and dollar in for grading. Is it worth it? Will it be better for re sale?

Poll Choices
Yes, send them in for grading.
 No, not worth it.

Not really worth it. The guys breaking down these sets are now barely getting what they paid after fees etc.
I can see this set being worth less in the future

I agree about the grading but disagree with the set losing its value. Penny and dollar should take off in price and be almost worth the value of what I bought it for. The penny is in silver which hasnt happened before.

The market is being flooded with open sets, and a 20,000 mintage while fairly low still is alot for. Plus the set can be picked up for $229 on ebay

I wouldn't bother with the grading. I don't really see the point since these coins are in top shape to begin with. I don't think a label confirming them as a 69 or 70 would increase the value enough to make up for the fees you would have to pay, but that's just me.

I guess I'm not. I was thinking maybe I could buy one at my coin store and send it in for grading... but the dollar at my local store is selling for $125.

Question about grading, when a coin is graded is it from then on "locked" in the slab? To me this would take away from my enjoyment of the coin as I would like to see the coin by itself (in a capsule) or as part of a set/collection.

I actually avoid purchasing slabbed coins as I wouldn't want to devalue it by removing it from the slab.

You can always take the coin out of the slab and it wont devalue it unless you damage it. Most people take them out of the slabs.

Ok I see. But I guess if you wanted to resell it you would have to get it regraded?

It would be better. But I guess most people like to buy raw. It depends on the seller

Yes, unsealing the package invalidates the grading. Maybe try selling it as 'The Coin Formerly Graded as ICCS MS66' (if there are any Prince fans out there :-) ).

With top condition coins, there can be huge price differences for what are really (in an absolute sense), minor differences in condition.

A third party opinion on the grade at least gives both sides of a negotiation for a sale, a part of a basis, for a price agreement.

You need not ask for a grade now, unless really wanted an idea of the value, or if you really wanted to sell. Your call.
