I have a 1981p dime with this error?

Looking to see what you guys think it might be or how it happened?
I have no idea as my knowledge of errors is a little limited.
As you can see the reverse of the coin is normal.
Thanks for looking

Hello,

My best guess is that a collapse or failure in the die occurred during minting.

I also think that this protrusion initially had sharper edges on the top and then over time became smoothly rounded as they currently appear.

30 years in the school of hard knocks often produce well rounded presidents.

IMHO,

Thankyou for the response , mdpmedia. Very plausible idea of die failure. The die must have stayed somewhat intact to give the detail in the ear though. It just surprises me that much metal on the obverse is protruding with no ill effect to the reverse.

Looks like it was heated to me causing a gas bubble.

I agree with John1. This is just PMD from heat. It is not an error.

A few like this have been posted on other forums lately. Heat damage. PMD.

Thanks everyone for your reply. A gas bubble created by heat. Well, I guess I need to cancel my order at the Porshe dealership :p Not getting rich on this one......

So would that also indicate that the inside of the 'blob' would be hollow?

It should be hollow. There is trapped gas between the clad layers.
