Curious what you all think -
Seems its PL but I dont know much about the DMPL ..

Shes abit (well more like ALOT) scratched up- But for 27$ I'm happy to have it to learn with .. Not to much worried about the value of it .
just curious about the finish- and VAM since I'm tied up with two I think it could be ...

- Vamming this one , the thing I did come out of the search with was a VAM- 14 or 17 ... cant be positive .. and unsure which markers I should look for or try to take notice of ..

but heres a few shots I took of this just now , so as some of you get to check them out I also will be seeing what I can see in these closer shots ..

thanks for anyones time here , just kind of a two part questions -

A= Which VAM you thinking ? And B - How can I study these DMPL and PL strikes ? ..

Not much help on the VAM part, but I can be to the PL part. A quote, from where I learned "There are a couple of ways to tell the difference between DMPL, PL, and SPL Morgan dollars. The most common way, and probably the most reliable, is to hold the coin on its edge next to a page of printed matter (such as a newspaper) where you have marked off the inches. You should have good light directed towards the coin (but not directly into the coin such that is reflecting.) Then, look into the coin's mirrored surface and see how far down the scale you can clearly read the text.

DMPL Reflectivity Scale
Here is the scale that denotes the proper designation for the coin, based on reflectivity:

Semi-Prooflike (SPL) - 1 to 2 inches, devices must be frosted
Prooflike (PL) - 2 to 4 inches of reflectivity
Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) - More than 4 inches
Ultra Prooflike (UPL) - At least 8 inches"

Also, dont forget to pair to other pictures of PL and DMPL coins as well.

Sweet ,

Thanks Dan , I knew I saw something about that awhile ago . but at that time I had no interest lol ... (and I didnt have it explained as you did here very helpful )

I did try to compare this to others , and the closest thing I found with the same "mirrors and look" was a 1880-p PL / but then I saw another one that was DMPL and looked close too (the DMPL I compared to was also alil scratched up but not as bad as mine )

Thanks again brother , much appreciated
think I'm gona go give this a shot :-)

So checking the reflection in this one (and the other 1880-s Pl I have)

When sitting on its edge I can make out up to the 6" mark ... Just barely can make out the 7"

With my 1880-S minted one I'm making out the 5" mark .. pretty neat , and cool to see it in action haha ..

thanks again Dan learning something everyday on this site .!

No problem. Remember in order to get a PL or DMPL grade, that measurement has to apply to both sides of the coin. Here's a link to one of my slabs which is a PL in case you're looking for more pics : https://goccf.com/t/113901#113901

Ohh Very Nice Example .! Thanks man ,

Ahh as for grading this I dont know about sending it through untill I get a idea of the VAM and if its really worth it .. (since I got it cheap add 25 or so for grading its about 52$ into this if I got it graded) ...

But just for now its kinda a "hole" or space filler in my 1880's that I have .. seems two of them 4 I have (have 2 s and 2 p so far) Are atelast PL .if not maybe one DMPL ..

And this one here does have 5 inch mirror on the obverse and hitting the 6 mark oon the rev ..

the 1880-S seems to be even 5inch both sides with rev being able to just make out the 6" line .

Pretty neat lil trick / thingy there on testing the mirrors .. haha But did alil researching so These things will be another "Project" once I get deeper into the morgans.

Thanks again Dan I appreciate it , really a big help man .!
