Last night I was quite excited to find this while CRH, but once I picked it up, I immediately thought that it was a fake.

Has anyone encountered fake nickels in this time period? Is that a common thing? What is the best way of knowing for sure?

The reasons that I think it is fake are:

1) It feels light, I didn't weigh it, but just by feel it seems lighter than any of the other 99.9% nickel coins

2) The feel of the metal just seems off..it reminds me of the old TTC subway tokens, or some sort of token from an arcade

3) The condition of it seemed too new for such an old coin

Hopefully I'm wrong, but I don't have my hopes up.

Thanks!

As a further note, I went here: http://bc.rcmp.ca/ViewPage.action?s...tentId=16067 and I don't see any of the things noted on this site for some other fakes (filled in A, curled 5, lack of detail on George)

It looks real to me. Why would someone fake a 1935 nickel?

There are many contemporary counterfeits of the Geo 5th nickel nickels. This one does not have any of the indicators that I use/am familiar with.
Rest in Peace

, mokpie!

Weight would help. If you don't have a scale, a gun reloader, coin shop, jeweler, high school chem lab, gold buyer, etc should be able to help.,

That is a good question, but remember we had a guy here in the U.S. that made counterfeit common U.S. nickels and made a good living doing so until being caught.
