Odd (?) Error On '55 P Wheatie ? - Coin Community Forum

chip418 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 03/27/2012 10:49 am I recently purchased a large bag of wheat cents at a local auction house and discovered a red bu 1955 P with what appears to me to be a planchet error. The motto at the top of the obverse has only the word "IN" and the words "God We Trust" are missing. I've studied the coin under 60 power and can find no trace of grinding, but the planchet itself appears to be thinner at that point. Assuming this is a mint error, does this coin have any significant value? Thanks, I appreciate your taking the time to respond. Joe Report this Post to the Staff

I'm guessing Struck Through Grease filled die. I'm no expert on the topic but I'm sure others will chime in. Report this Post to the Staff
timsumrall Pillar of the Community United States 1256 Posts	Posted 03/27/2012 1:02 pm Picture would help but it sounds like something obstructed the die when it struck the cent. Most likely grease but other things can get in the way as well. "Greasers" would not add any premium. Other "Struck through" cents might depending on what was in the way and the visual result. I also posed the question on the PCGS forum and the response was that tapered planchets are not that uncommon for the '55 and are seen even on the famous DD. Thanks again.
