Hello to all. I just joined today. I have a question about a potential error coin that I have. I have an 1880-O Morgan silver dollar that has what looks like a mint mark (O)or it could be an (O)from the word dollar, not sure. The mint mark is on the obverse side of the coin and is located right at the curve of the neck. Has anyone ever seen one of these? And if she, what would be the approximate value of the coin?

Thanks!

tdlee22,

These are hard to answer without pictures.

Lacking pictures I can tell you that many Morgan Dies clashed in the minting of millions of dollars ... where the dies came together with tons of force without a blank planchet in between them. The result was the transfer of details from the obverse to the reverse and vice-versa. What you describe sounds like a clashed die and the word "God" from the motto transfers to mid-way up Liberty's neck. There is also a line above this from the leading edge of the wing. Check VamWorld.com for 1880-O clashed varieties to check some out.

I moved your question to the 'Classic US Variety & Error Coins' forum for the appropriate attention.
Rest in Peace

I'm no expert but I don't think anybody can give an opinion until they see a photo.

I, for one, am really curious...so please post a pic!

It would be great to see the obverse and a close up of the extra letter.
