As you can see this proof obverse looks like it is melted I guess you could say. Just wondering if you would consider this impaired and only worth silver value. Edited by Southern Yankee 03/27/2012 4:20 pm

That is very strange. If you purchased it directly from the mint I would be sending it back to them.

Are you talking about the waviness of the mirrored surface? Mine looks the same as yours. I thought it was by design.

Is the reflection of something overhead, like curtains? I just happened to have taken a few images of mine which I am about sell (I should have wiped the capsules before taking these); I don't see the "waves" but it may be my angle.

That waviness is actually in the fields on the obverse. I had bought 30 of these when they came out. I looked through about half of them and they looked okay so I didn't bother to look through the rest. I sold off the first half back then and I just pulled the rest out and I have 9 of these with this. It's not part of the design. Well it is now. I'm thinking worn dies maybe. I don't know.
I was going to sell some, but I would hate to sell at retail in this kind of shape. I wouldn't want to pay full price if I could help it.

It wouldn't be considered an impaired proof. An impaired proof is damaged or worn/scuffed from circulation.

...if anything it adds a little "character". Why settle for plain, flat fields when you can have "waves"? From what I have seen, these Lincoln Commems are not going for much over melt anyway...eBay here I come (LN6, LN7 and LN8)!

Sounds like an error to me.

The one included in my C&C Set had smooth fields but both proofs that I purchased individually had wavy obverse fields and to a lesser extent, some minor waviness on the reverse fields. On the coin pictured below, the effect is most visible around the date.

Open the capsule and make sure you are not seeing an image of the inside surface of the capsule. We had that problems with some of the proof president dollars. The looked like they had a series of concentric ridges on the surfaces. Even with close examination and pictures from various angles the ridges were still visible. But finally when the case was opened the ridges disappeared. The mirrors were reflecting an image of the non-smooth inner surface of the holder.

I opened the capsule and it is definitely the the coin. Here is a pic without the capsule lid. If this is an error as biggfredd said what kind of error would this be? From what I could see only the fields are affected.

Probably just a worn die, possibly one with improper hardening.
