Thought I would surf the web re. coin doubling.
Here are a few links

http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglos...cal_doub.htm

Of interest - that the die is "jarred out of position as a result of vibration or improper coin press maintenance"

More on Die Deterioration Doubling at

also

and
http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglos..._hubbing.htm

Of interest - the "second hubbing" process.

Particularly the eighth paragraph pertaining to "Doubling" - the loose collar.

I have recently found a 50 cent Federation coin (WA) that shows nice "doubling" on the Obverse and Reverse.

I have attached an image below.
As for the 2001 Federation coin that I have shown earlier, the doubling is over particular parts of the design only .

Here is the 2004 50 cent piece that I found last night. A lot of "doubling" over selected parts of the design.

All these observations make me wonder why this "doubling" occurred only in 2001
I'd guess it's due to the fact they minted 43.1m, double (or more) of most previous years. I'd say the dies were used until they were virtually worn out.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

RAD change... (really throwing out the "welcomes" this week !.

I must admit, since joining Coin Community in March of this year I have learned a lot. I now have a comprehensive list of coin varieties and errors to look for. Far more than I ever could have gained from McDonald or other coin books. Or from randomly browsing the Internet.

"Show and tell" is also fun and very informative.
I find it inspiring when other members turn up interesting coins in their change and post pictures of these .

Thanks to nancyc for the information re. coin mintage numbers . What source do you use for these numbers ?. Do you find McDonald's figures reliable ?.
It would be interesting to see if there is a relation between coin doubling and mintage numbers.
