As I'm sure many of you know, our government is releasing the next fiscal year's budget today. One of the measures in it is the elimination of the penny. Details are scarce at this point, but this snippet was found in a G&M article: "Perhaps the measure that will have the most visible and universal effect on Canadians is a plan to eliminate the penny. Starting this fall, the Royal Canadian Mint will no longer put pennies in circulation, saving the government $11-million a year and bringing Canada in line with countries such as New Zealand and Australia. (Consumers will be able to continue using pennies "indefinitely," but prices will be rounded to the nearest five-cent increment if pennies aren't available.)" Say goodbye to the penny. Fun coin to collect, but pretty useless for commerce in the 21st century.

I guess the government decided that the penny no longer makes cents.
Nickel for your thoughts?

Confirmed. Page 217 of the 2012 budget plan indicates the government will stop distributing pennies as of Fall 2012.

I only hope the US follows suit--it's a worthless denomination, unneeded for commerce.

Here's an article. Maybe you can talk some cents into us Americans, maybe lob some snowballs across the border. (It's never worked before, don't know why I'd expect it to work now...)

(It's never worked before, don't know why I'd expect it to work now...) Start lobbing snowballs; trigger a war between the U.S. and Canada; and in a hundred years from now issue a special commemorative penny recognizing the War of 2012!

You could see this coming... but I was hoping they'd stop after they produced the 2020 penny. That way I'd have a centuries worth of small pennies.
