Hi, I found a 1943 War Nickel. It some tarnish and is a blackish color. Is there a proper way to clean this tarnish off without diminishing the value of the coin? Can I do the aluminum foil, baking soda, and hot water trick like on silver? Also is that method ok to do on say a 1960 silver quarter with tarnish? Or should I just leave it alone and not clean it? Thanks!

Enig., To the best of my knowledge these War Nickels and a '60 quarter in general are not worth much more than than melt unless you have an error type or some very high grade specimen. Personally, unless it falls into one of the above classes, I would just leave it alone and spend your time on some other more valuable coin. If you just have to clean it no matter what, try some low or no residue acetone. mdpmedia

Thanks, for your answer, I know they don't carry any premium other than melt value. But I wanted to display the nickel in my book of flips just so I can explain to people what " War Nickels" are. It is all grungy though and I wanted it to be more shiny and pretty. so I guess bottom line is that it has no numismatic value, although it may 60 years down the road. I guess ruining it now, when it might be of some value over melt in the far future is my main concern.

Since so many have survived in MS condition, I wouldn't worry about it ever having any real value over bullion. I'd be the first to tell you NEVER clean a coin, but in this case do whatever floats your boat. Or don't waste your time at all and go spend ten bucks or so on ebay and get yourself a nice uncertified/uncirculated example to show people.

All the War Nickels I have found roll searching are dirty and ugly as well. I might try to clean a few up for display.

Yeah, I decided to stick to the golden rule and didn't clean it :) So the aluminum and baking soda trick is a no no on silver coins of value? Just ALWAYS leave them alone right?
