Hmm ,
to my other 70-s its real Dark - Black .. Other 70-s that I have is well , a nickel color lol wit a shine .. this is just black ..
I honestly dont know and comparing to others I have and online I've found nothing like this other then the earlier black beauties ..
but if its not odd then in the pile of "Not So Much" It goes ...
Honestly donno why its black but guessing its just a fluke ..

And dont get me wrong ,
Not thinking this is a RARE catch worth Thousands ... Just odd is all .. tring to think if I should label it as BLACK .. r just TARNISHED .. Or if there by chance was something with the 1970-s nickel that I dont know .. (not a full time nickel collector-)

I'm sure it's just environmental damage. Maybe it was buried for a while or something.

I have not heard of a black beauty for that year. To me it just looks dirty. John1

I know its got Dirt on it too as you see around the edges .. but I'm guessing it got burned up somewhere just from searching around I found some that looked that way- But just was curious what you all thought about it is all ..) really just weird to me that its so dark -

True 'black beauties' can be found in 1958 and 1959 dated coins ... they are not 'black' but rather gun-metal gray and are quite distinctive when seen in hand.
Type 'Black Beauty' into the CCF search bar and you'll find a ton of info and photos.
Your coin is most likely enviromental damage ... I have a large container full of 'black' Jefferson just like it.

Hey there, I was walking on the beach today and found one just like it. Same year and everything. Did you ever find out what happened to make it black? I was looking up Google and it said that when exposed to sulfur, nickel can turn black. Just wondering if you ever got an answer. I'm keeping it, it's waaaay too cool not to.

They should be dark, but still show cartwheels on the coin. A lot of coins are found outside and they are worth what it says on the back of the coin. Here is what they are taking about for color: http://www.error-ref.com/?s=Improper+Annealing:

It is not a Black Beauty and is not a collectible coin because of damage. total value 0.05 Hey ,but good for asking .
