Just thought I would post these two Seated Liberty dollars that I purchased for my type set that I'm currently assembling. Bought these about a 6-8 months ago but I thought I would post them here. Please give me your opinion on grade, these are two of the more expensive pieces in my collection but also my favorites.

I'd go with EF-40 for the 1842, or EF-45 if there is some luster persisting around the stars, date, and/or legends. There are quite a few small contact marks but no obvious "problems".
The 1871 looks like a VF-30.
Nice coins, perfect for a circulated type set.

Thanks, that was what I was thinking. To my amateur grading skills comparing the 1842 to some other EF-45 coins I think that it is really close. It is considerably darker around the stars which might be the remnants of some luster.

Nice coins, thanks for sharing.
They get pretty expensive don't they ?
But you can enjoy them for a long, long time, and there's lots of other things in this world that you can spend your money on that are gone in just a moment

Excellent pickups! And we all know these are not cheap acquisitions!

I like VF-35 for the '42 and VF-30 for the '71.

Fantastic coins!

The common dates start at around 230 in G4 according to Numismedia and go up in price fairly rapidly with a substancial jump in price between EF40 and AU50. There are also a lot of problem Seated dollars and fakes out there so you have to be really careful. I bought mine from a trusted dealer in my area. I think I might have paid a little too much if the 1842 is a VF35 not a EF40 but I guess that is the cost of getting decent coins. On the 1871 I think the coin dealer I bought it from cut me a really good deal.

Two very nice original coins. I'd go EF40 and VF30

I would go with EF-40 or 45 on the 1842 and VF-35 on the 1871. Love the look of the coins!
