I have 1953, 54 and 56 sets in white cardboard. Any help identifying would be appreciated!

We would need better photos of the coins, to confirm that those coins are indeed proof-like. A lot of sets are out there, where the PL coins were removed and replaced with uncirculated business strikes.

Card board holders like these were also available to dealers who filled them with business strike coins to cash in on the demand for mint sets during the great coin boom. The mint never referred to PL sets as anything other than uncirculated sets, the dealers were selling the same thing "uncirculated sets".In 1960 the mint marked their sets to make them distinguishable from the copycats, and in 1961 started packaging the coins in the now traditional pliofilm.

Visit once in a while in the "Classic" circulating coin section shows how many discussions about those fancy "collectors" items abound...

Charlton Standard Catalogue (Vol 2 Collector and Maple Leaf Issues) contains valuable info about those PL sets.
