Here's a coin I bid on today, thinking I might get it cheaply. Sadly, I didn't win it--I was a little unsure how much to take off for that big scratch.
The coin sold for $65--would you have bid higher?

No. I consider the gash a problem and the overall surfaces are not greatly appealing. Prices are driven up by collectors who can not wait. You have to decide if you want this now or another coin later.

Thanks for the input Doug! I put my limit at €40 ($53), which I felt is on the high side.

The gash is likely a "discovery mark" (made by the metal tool used to dig it up).
OK to wait for a nicer one.

Yes, I wondered that too--I've seen that arched cut on dug items.

You did well by not bidding any higher on this coin IMHO. You have to set a budget price and stick to it (unless you're rich). Good on ya for sticking to your conviction on this one.
