From the same lot I bought recently this 1883 nickel.. The doubling I see looks likes md to me.. But I never knew that md also exits on pre 1900 coins.. Also 2 big die cracks on the obverse..

We had this discussion last fall and I forgot the name of the man who designed it into coins from that period. It was a way to prolong the life of the coin. The process was used for a while and then dropped, named after the man who invented it. I can't remember and I tried for nearly an hour to google it, but failed.

Longacre doubling - I am a huge fan of 3 cent nickels, where it is often found as well.

Longacre doubling tends to completely (or nearly) circle the feature - I'm inclined to think Machine Doubling for this one unless there's a hub/die double I'm unaware of.
