I have a fellow co-worker who traveled the world for a few years and collected A LOT of coins. she is retiring soon and didn't want to keep all the coins she collected, so she gave them to me. I have a medium sized zip lock back full of coins (weighs maybe 15-20 lbs) from all over the world. I have no idea where to even begin. I am OK with holding on to them, but does anyone have suggestions? a lot of them are from south america and europe. the european coins are before the euro switch. I can't even identify 90% of these.

Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000

You can probably get it from the library. I know mine has a copy.

This might help you a little http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...e-Guide.aspx And you could have a contest or two here on CCF and give away some of them.

I like numista and don's world coin gallery websites. But they're not much help if you're lost in the first place. Google is always helpful, even with partial phrases like BAHK POCCNN or MAGYAR KIR...

If they were taken from pocket change odds are they weren't very valuable in the first place. There's always the possibility of silver, but most countries phased that out in the 1960s, just like the USA. So she'd have had to accumulate before then for that to be likely. But it's worth setting aside pre-1960s silverish coins for further study.

Even common 'junk' world coins are sold individually for $0.10-0.50 or by the pound for $5-10/lb, so they do have value. I consider South American coins to be harder to come by than European coins.

At least post some pictures of the ones you consider interesting or promising. . .
