I was curious if anyone knew the Country and or Year of this coin? I was looking into the usual spots: Japan, Korea, China, but no luck...

I did notice a grazing between the upper oriental characters. Is that usual with Eastern coins?

Reeded 23.5 mm

Yes, it is Republic of China, but look under Kwangtung Province.

20 cents (2 jiao) year 18, Y# 426.

Authentic? I don't know.

I agree with svslav on all comments.
I also have an example of this coin in the same condition.

My coin came out of a dealer's junk box about 10 years ago. I can remember about 10 others in the box at the time.
Fake? Never thought about it until now, but I guess it could be.
The detail on mine is quite sharp and has the same white appearance as this one.

If mine IS a fake, I have certainly not lost any money on it, because I paid so little for it in the first place.

These coins are reasonably common, but there ARE scarce and even rare varieties among them.

In his book 'Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Gold & Silver Coins', Ma Tak Wo lists the value of these in uncirculated from anywhere between $HK10 to $HK250, depending on the variety.

This would leave plenty of scope to make fakes of this coin, and for that reason, I see no motivation to get excited about my coin.

It's not that rare but because they are struck in low base silver, they might look a bit different. Think it was 60% alloy. I don't see it as an obvious counterfeit and think it's unlikely to be fake. Might be able to get one for around 10 dollars or so.

I think both illsutrated are good coins, from what I can see. The cracking near the characters is the die showing cracks, which would go into the face of the die, and so appear raised on the coin's surface. The strokes and colour looks quite acceptable. I can remember when these were common enough that certain people (dealers)would use them as quarters in parking meters. I will do a look for varieties and get back to you after the weekend- I have a Kann fairly close.
