notwithstanding Nancy's excellent advice ...
a few years ago, I needed a camera. I noticed that another CCF contributor, Yass, consistently had high quality pics, so I asked what he used. He answered a Canon, of The IXUS range. So I bought one, and was very happy for several years, until a cyclone blew some rain into an area that I had imagined was safe ... and my Ixus grew mould inside the lens. So, last year, I bought another, but later model: Canon IXUS220HS. And I got it at Hardly Normal when they had a two-for-one offer - two for $229; and gave the other one to my brother for his birthday.
I use these cameras for everything: coins, upto landscapes.
Why I'm happy: very compact, and particularly slim, so it is genuinely pocket-sized*;
Battery-life is remarkable;
it has plenty of zoom and all the other things you expect from a modern digital.
*pocket-sized is important to me, because I like to take it with me.
Remember the adage:
"The best camera in the world is the one that you have with you."
Canon bring out a new model every six months, and the just-superceded ones can be found a really good prices.
I looked at buying on-line, but the sellers with low prices always charge $69 or $99 for postage, so I've bought my last two cameras locally, after shopping around.
