Found this the other day... From what I read an unplated cent should have luster otherwise its a fake. I can't imagine how a zinc coin could have luster after being in circulation. Also, I have read that some people make fake ones by dipping them in a chemical to remove the copper, but how does it not also corrode the zinc? Anyways here is the one I found. I have no idea whether it is real or fake...

Now I'm curious what they would look like if the copper were removed with ferric chloride. I'll have to try it right now...

Looks somewhat circulated to me, makes me wonder why it would get around before somebody caught it. It should stick out like a sore thumb.

Oops, PCB etchant (AKA Nic-a-Date) contains hydrochloric acid in addition to ferric chloride. HCl has a fun Mr. Wizard effect when it reacts with zinc. Don't try this at home kids!

Looks like an "ashtray" cent to me...I bet if you rubbed some baking soda on it it would turn copper again....notice the copper color in the high spots on the rim! That is where rubbing and handling has rubbed off the crud
