Searching a bag of Lincoln wheat cents, I stumbled across a 1957 specimen (actually I found two of them), on which an extra "I" seems to be put between the B and E of LIBERTY so that it looks like LIBIERTY. Does anyone know of other specimen existing with this feature? The second one is a bit clearer than the first one, but both have the extra "I". What could have happened here?
The reason they rolled over and died was that it was a progressing die chips. They were trying to number them and then realized they would vary according to the die chipping as the dies were continued to be used. So after years it was abandoned.
