So I'm trying to get this identifying errors on pennies and I'm using a 10x 20x loupe is there something a little more easier to use. Just curious on what the experts use.

What kinds of errors or maybe even varieties are you looking for?

Usually for RPMs and such, a 10x - 16x is good. I use a 16x and I wouldn't go with anything more powerful, or you actually start to see things that really aren't an error or a variety.

I just use a simple 4X magnifier with about a 7 or 8X insert and on a stand. I usually think if I need more power than that, I'll just throw it back into circulation.

I have used a 10x,14x,16x,20x and 30x loupes. I now use a 14x doublet and would recommend that to you for looking for errors and varieties. For everything else I recommend a 10x. If you can afford it get a hasting triplet.

Another good place to look is Amateur Geologist. I purchased one of their BelOMO 7x Triplet Loupe magnifiers which they claim is better than the Bausch & Lomb 7x Hastings Triplet which they also carry. It does have a a viewing area of 22mm vs the B & L Triplet's 19.8 mm lens diameter.

The BelOMO's are available in 7x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, and a 20x Quadruplet Loupe. Amateur Geologist offers a 5% discount if you buy more than one power of BelOMO magnifier at the same time.

They also carry Eschenbach.

I've had a USB microscope for about a year and it's great. You just have to realize that you're seeing details beyond what can be seen with the coin in hand.

I remember reading somewhere that the TPG's use 10x magnification as standard practice. Helps a bit so that an opinion is not too lenient or severe.

I have a 20x loupe for examining the internal flaws in cut gemstones, very useful in this regard, with a depth of field of only about a millimetre. Such a loupe is almost useless for coin examination, because the depth of field is way too narrow.

I've used the same 16X doublet for the past 25+ years; I wouldn't trade it for anything. I also have a 20x Bausch & Lomb if I really need to get a closer look at something. Also have a QX-5, but not the biggest fan of it. Don't like the lighting.

Read up on them here first. You get what you pay for when you buy a USB microscope. I bought a cheap one and don't like it all that much and my nephew bought an expensive one and it's great.

I bought one for around $36 and I had to return it, since it didn't work as advertised.

I really want one, but can't find a decent one for under $50 that works as advertised. Usually they don't zoom in and save the photo as advertised. If anyone knows of one, I'd be very great-full to hear about it. I did a post a while back in the photography section, but couldn't get anyone to really respond.
