In the last six months, the DJIA has climbed reasonably steadily and the U.S. labor market seems to have passed a bottoming out. I think for these reasons, the PM market has not been all that exciting for the last six months.
The U.S. economy is going through what I think is going to be a long period of recovery, that will take years. It is destined NOT to be the biggest economy in the World again: China will see to that. Fortunately, China and the U.S, are not natural enemies. Never really were.

Quote: Fortunately, China and the U.S, are not natural enemies. Never really were. That's true... but then we are not naturally friendly either. There is a vast culture gap between Americans and Chinese. We both need to improve our understanding of the other. Hopefully, that will come, in time, without too many problems between us.

Quote: Fortunately, China and the U.S, are not natural enemies. Never really were. Good point. Even in the coldest days of the cold war, our focus was always firmly fixed on the USSR and the communists Chinese hated the Russians far more than the US. Of course, a lot of that was due to regional geography and the fact that China was comparably well behind in their infrastructural development. When China manages to achieve parity with the US, economically and militarily, I think their politburo will look at us quite differently than what they do today.

Quote: Fortunately, China and the U.S, are not natural enemies. Never really were. hmm.... I beg to differ actually, I wouldn't go as far as saying enemies but relations a pretty strained and were so throughout recent history US treatment of Chinese works during the few gold rushes and building of the American railways wasn't exactly one of equality, and since the opium wars of the late 1800s, China's relations with Western nations were strained. All Chinese people today, peasant and CEO, would be able to tell you how the Eight-Nation Alliance (USA included in there) sacked Beijing (then Peking) under the guise of quelling civil rebellions, and took away many artifacts that Western museums and governments refused to return to this day. Land was force to be signed away, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, outer Mongolia, parts of Vietnam, etc. The effects of which are still being felt. American government backed the Nationalists in the Chinese civil war after WWII, and it was the Communist party that won. The Americans then stood alongside Taiwan. Even there though, the Nationalist remnants in Taiwan felt betrayed when the American slowly withdrew their backing as China kicked Taiwanese representation out of one international organization after another. The Americans then stood opposite Chinese in the Vietnam and Korean wars, and have troops and bases stationed all around China. Both countries were engaged in espionage activities against each other since the 70s and still do. So no, it's not just a cultural difference. In comparison, the Chinese were much more friendly with the Russians until the Korean war stained China-Russia relations

No doubt Poboxw that is some fine points, as I was scratchin my chin on that never natural enemies.... Ed made a fine point, both cultures need to take the time to learn about each other.... I just sold a Combattra super robot system not long back, to a great Asian friend form New York, via KBcollector. Chogokin, translation die-cast robot an I often have a few example for sale on ebay. I grew up collecting Voltron, an watching an loving all the Asian robot anime style cartoons as a young child.... How many Americans have the information on such a eastern base collectors hobby, way less then 1 percent of population, as is with collecting coins.... I have studied many aspects of Asia, including one of my favorite fable stories that is all to true that I mention often.... First emperor of China united a land after hundreds of centuries of unsettled civil wars of sorts. And he had everything, minus the the ability to LIVE FOREVER. So he sent his wise men out in four directions, with orders to not return until they had brought back the fountain of youth. Well, of course after some time he got impatient, and heads literally rolled. So, they mixed him up a nice concoction of ground up jade mixed with Mercury. So, around the age of fifty, he drank his magic potion, and began to slowly die in much pain over the next year as the potion slowly killed him, an no doubt that last year he had a shade of green to his appearance, as the jade was coming to the surface, lol.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qin_Shi_HuangYou also made reference to the countless amount of Chinese immigrants, who were in fact one of the main driving force in building a huge amount of the western railroad and Western America, an no doubt that was different harsh world with much prejudice around every corner for any minority an a very tough short life for many of them.... I recall the history channel preview show of old westerns, where the experts talk about the film during commercials, and the movie in question was UNFORGIVEN, perhaps one of Clint Eastwood's greatest pieces IMO. Well, I recall a huge amount of them felt the director an costume crew nailed the old west, as there are many scenes of the China railroad worker, English Bob, a fictional gun fighter looking for big bounties, this just was the cruel harsh wild west, many black cowboys, the way it really was.... I am certainly NOT proud of all our fore fathers did, slavery for example shameful to know it is even part of my historical bloodline, just is what it is..... Throughout all of time even in a time of such hate an misunderstanding of different cultures, you had people who changed the world for the better, at great cost via lives of entire family's, via much sacrifice and even acts many would consider a pure sin in the eyes of God.... John Brown did much that many would not agree with, an he had a harsh policy of bloodshed esp in Kansas, but he sacrificed his entire family to end slavery.... A year after he hung at the gallows, the union soldiers were marching south singing...."John Browns body lies smoldering in the grave, but his truth is marching on." I guess my point is there is always 90% of the ENTIRE world population in all cultures who is gonna be the bad seeds, but the other 10% of us all the make up the good seeds, out weigh all the idiots going through life with blinders on, or at least I like to think we do anyway ....

And it ended with such a positive message. It especially resonated with it being Easter Sunday. Very apropos. Thanks, Hawk!

Quote: Even in the coldest days of the cold war, our focus was always firmly fixed on the USSR and the communists Chinese hated the Russians far more than the US. There was a lot of tension between the Russians and the Chinese. They are geographical neighbors, so are much closer to each other than either is to the US. Yes, the US and Russia are relatively close where Alaska and Asia are closest but there is still ocean water separating two fairly remote and unpopulated areas. At times, there was quite a 3-way political free-for-all going on there with all 3 playing off the other 2 against each other when possible. Quote: I wouldn't go as far as saying enemies but relations a pretty strained and were so throughout recent history I'm not saying that there were never any strained relations between these two countries, only that we share no common border so are not natural enemies or competitors for the same land and other resources. Quote: US treatment of Chinese works during the few gold rushes and building of the American railways wasn't exactly one of equality, and since the opium wars of the late 1800s, China's relations with Western nations were strained. I would agree with that. China was pretty much abused by anyone who had the military power to do it and could travel to China to abuse them there or bring them to their country. My own father served on a Yangtze River gun boat in the late 1930s, so the US had a presence in China even then. For the most part, their primary missions were to evacuate westerners and to document Japanese aggression against China. I can understand a lot of the Chinese attitude from reading about the opium wars and other problems of the 1800s through WW I. That was an awful thing to do and the only reasons for it were greed and arrogance. Not a good part of US or European history, IMHO. Quote: American government backed the Nationalists in the Chinese civil war after WWII, and it was the Communist party that won. The backing was understandable considering the strong anti-communist feelings in the US in the 1940s and 1950s. Also, I might add, that once Mao and his buddies won in China, they did the usual commie "purges" that killed between 60-100 million people. Obviously, this is an estimate because the records were and still are state secrets. Quote: Both countries were engaged in espionage activities against each other since the 70s and still do. Indeed so. Chinese hackers are legendary these days for their industrial and military espionage. This is opposed primarily by US ELINT assets via satellites, aircraft, and submarines. Bottom line is that there is no clear cut good guys vs. bad guys. There are only bad episodes in history in which all countries have participated at one time or other and bad policies that nations adopt for their own selfish reasons. Hopefully, we will all outgrow these tendencies at some point in the not too distant future.
