I had a chance to stop by the sort of local pawn / coin shop today and was glad I did. He didn't have any common date coins for me at spot but he did have some very nice Franklin half dollars and was willing to deal on them. Here's a pic: Both of these are from 1957 and 1 is BU while the other is AU. Both are nicer looking than the so-so scan I got of them. Also tried my digi-cam but did not like its results either. I'm not a numismatic coin collector but these seemed really nice and when he cut the price by $5 each, I was sold on them.

Bugs bunny is a 1955 variety. I think you're looking at the BU, Which is a grade.

Oh, yeah! Very very nice, Ed_B! Those Ben Franklin halves are ALWAYS a nice pick up...and both coins look to be in excellent condition.

Thanks, All. This was not a typical buy for me but they looked so nice and the price was right, so what the heck? Even if the silver content here is less than an oz., it's still good to pick up a little now and then.

Thanks, SouthSav. I really enjoy shopping for coins at a local shop. The only problem with it is that it is a small pawn shop, so doesn't have a lot of inventory. I just have to drop by and see if he has anything that looks good to me. I only have a few Franklins but I do like them.

A lot of the fun part of collecting coins is that I remember them from when I was a kid back in the 1950s and 1960s. Just seeing some of them brings back some real memories. Being an oldster has some advantages. Remembering a time when 90% silver coins were MONEY that we used routinely is just one of them.

Indeed so, MK. As a wise man once said, "If you're not having any fun and you're not making any money, just what the **** are you doing?".
