I was looking through ebay and a couple of guys are selling bags of foreign coins that are unsearched and weigh 22 pounds. That would be a lot of coins to sort through. Have any of you guys tried it? Or do you think it would be worthwhile ? I would think it would be fun to search through one of these bags. I look forward to any opinions. Thanks, BenVA

I've bought bulk coins, though not in lots that large. I think a single lot weighing 10 kilos would probably have lots of duplicates. I'd rather get ten 1 kilo lots from 10 different sources - you'd probably get more variety that way.

Hey BenVA, I bought the 10kg (22 lbs.) lot of world coins on ebay. I didn't find anything particularly valuable but it was loads of fun searching through all those coins. I wish that I had had a Krause book at the time, though. Yes, you get lots of duplicates in the bunch and Sap is probably right about buying the coins from different sources and getting more variety. I sold a few pounds of my duplicates on ebay and traded a few pounds with other people.

Ben,
I have bought a couple bulk lots in the past, not of this particular person but from someone here on the forum and from a local coin show. The ones I got from the forum member was mostly sorted already and that was a great deal and the ones I got from a local coin show I got 5 lbs for $20 and it had lots of duplicates in it. Check with a local coin shop if possible and see if they have a bulk lot they will sell and compare prices. The one I go to here he has some large boxes filled with foreign coins and you could search through it all day. I think he charges like 5 for a $1 or something like that. Seems like a little more money but then you can sit there all day and pick and choose. I need to go do that again because after sap's contest I am feeling a world coin fix!

like others have said, I have bought as well but not that big of a lot, but I did buy about 15 pound but mine came from 3 different sources, One kilo bag from Downies, one from a forum member, one form my local coin shop, I found doing this that I got a lot of different thing, but also notice that most of the stuff from each place had a lot of doubles in it. But yes it is alot of fun to look and sort this many coins. It took mt about 3 months to get it all sorted out and I am just about done sorting that way I can buy more. So if I was you I would buy 4 five pound lot that would probably give you a beter selection.

Thanks for the replies guys. Me and my wife both love sorting through coins. Although after sorting she doesn't care much about them any longer. I may try one of the smaller lots. If the small lot is good then I may move on to a bigger one. BenVA

What is the average price per coin that one should pay, including shipping, when buying a large lot? My guess is that you'd obviously want to be able to try to resell the stuff you don't want and at least get your money back on those coins.

I am not sure what the average would be Mary. This is my first purchase of a lot like this. I will try to give you guys an idea once I receive it and start going through it. I will probaobly sell the extras off at some local auctions. That is if no one here wants to trade for some of them.BenVA

Well I have sorted them out by country. I have containers and Ziploc bags everywhere. There was a lot of variety, but I did get a lot of coins from Spain and France. I will try to let everyone know haw many different countries soon. There are several coins from the 1800's in the lot and a few early 1900's. Most are more recent. I will try to update again in a day or so. BenVA

Do you mind sharing the name of seller that you bought this from?

equitycoins is the sellers name. They seemed polite when I emailed them a question about shipping after the auction was over. They replied in a timely manner. They also shipped pretty quickly to.
