I've been focusing my collecting efforts on world coins from the year 2000, whether or not they are millenium commemoratives. This coin arrived yesterday.

It's a very handsome coin, but does not photograph easily. The obverse shows the Poland national emblem, an eagle, in the center.

The reverse is designed so that what you see depends on the viewing angle. The effect is not very strong but does work. One view has the year 2000 in the center surrounded by a moon and stars. The other view has the year 2001 in the center and rays streaming out so the center circle forms a sun.

I'll work on the camera angles when I get a chance and see if I can post images of the two different reverse views.

A very good looking coin :)
The effect is also brilliantly designed, I hope you can get to take pics of each angles.

Very nice coin.

Obtained two of them a couple of weeks ago as I collect bi-metallic and tri-metallic coins.

Here are my best efforts at photographing the two views of the reverse.

Poland-2-Zloty-Coin-Millennium-Commemorative Poland-2-Zloty-Coin-Millennium-Commemorative

On the left is the Sun and on the right the Moon and stars. The moon is a crescent moon on the right side of the image and the four stars are at the 6, 8, 10 and 12 o'clock positions.

There is a bag mark or scrape at the 4 o'clock position that is not nearly so noticeable with the coin in hand, but it changes the way light reflects off that area so it looks pretty horrible in the image.

I had a very hard time picking up the change between 2000 and 2001. The Sun is supposed to correspond to 2001 but it doesn't show up well on the image.

I doubt that, it is a low value coin, and if it were for security, they would apply that to other coins as well.
I think they tried to make beautiful coin and they succeeded that :)

The night is 2000, and the day is 2001, the coin is officially called "The Year 2000 - the turn of millenniums"

They have some excellent coins to see.
check the webpage of the National Bank of Poland :http://www.nbp.pl/

click for English and the section "banknotes & coins" and so on.

There are coins where this technology is actually used for such purposes, but as RenaL wrote, that was probably not the primary reason in this case.

This feature is called "latent image" and was AFAIK first used on Spanish coins. It can also be found on some coins from the UK (£2), Japan (¥500) or Luxembourg (€2) for example.
