I just thought these were some good reads about the price of the penny and nickel especially being produced. Then I didn't know where to put the paper dollar article so just included it here. IT SEEMS SO SIMPLE THOUGH AND SO LOGICAL TO TAKE BOTH OF THESE STEPS. 1)GET RID OF THE PENNY AND NICKEL AND MAKE THE PENNIES COMPOSITION THE NEW NICKEL 2)I MEAN SAVE 5.6 BILLION OVER A FEW YEARS BY NOT REPRINTING BILLS? (I believe that any complaining about the weight of the coins is ridiculous. How many people now carry more than ten 1's in their wallet/purse? So 10 or less coins wouldnt kill anyone haha ) http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/08/y...us.html?_r=1http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/busines...5-6-billion/I know the second read is old, but still thought it is good. Any response is appreciated

This topic comes up about 2 or more times a month in one way or another it seems. Most everyone here posting to this discussion think that the cent and nickel and paper dollars should be history. Some want to still see them in proof and mint sets only. It doesn't matter much what we think I guess, those in power rarely make any sense anymore. They do what is in their best interest, in other words, somebody in power is still making money somehow even if the coins cost more to make than they are worth in face value.

@nickelguy- I figured the topic was brought up a lot, just wish there was a master thread or something for it so I could have just responded to someone else instead of creating yet another. It would be interesting to see the support the community could get together to possibly send something to our government as a mass (the internet community ie. facebook, twitter, everything) so that government could see that they have our support and that the only people against it are people afraid of change.

A good solution is to do a search and post to existing threads instead of starting a new one. Did you know Canada will stop making cents around mid-2012?

bigfredd- I do agree that would have been better, will do that from now on (still new to the forum) and yes in my first article posted it said I believe the canadian mint will quit producing pennies in the fall? And also like about 8-10 other countries that quit producing their lowest denomination.

US pennies have been pretty much useless for some time now. I would be in favor of eliminating them and using a cheaper version of the nickel. Can't buy much with a nickel anymore either but they still can be useful for making change.
I would also favor the elimination of $1-2 bills as well. Americans expect a dollar coin to be substantial. All of the ones that have been minted recently have been small and unimpressive to look at. The Susan B's were often mistaken for quarters. If they want to use coins as replacements for the smaller denomination bills, they ought to have some size and heft to them.

The penny should have been eliminated years ago. As for $1 coins, the current product looks like butt ugly brass arcade tokens. Is it that difficult to come up with something that has at least a little eye appeal?

I agree also, they would have to go back to the morgan/ike size coins. They had it right that time through and like ed said, the new coins are too similar in size to the quarter, even the sacs and pres dollars are almost of size and could be mistaken if quickly given for change. (and you cant trust everyone now) and like I said originally, anyone to complain about the size of the coin. How many people carry around more than 5-10 $1 bills? or carries money at all for that reason...

I'm wondering if this is a valid reason or something floated by the vending machine lobby? It would not bother me a bit to carry around $5-10 in $1-2 coins. In fact, I have a bunch of the $1 coins in a baggie on my desk. I use them from time to time and have had no problems with them. Some store clerks seems surprised to see them but all have accepted them without question.

yea that is another valid point. Vending machine couldnt take them, but how often are they used outside of possibly the work place? major machines for amusement places I'm sure have to be updated so often anyways for new bill designs

Virtually all multi-coin vend mechs made since 1979 take mini bux. The biggest obstacle is usually the slot that the coin goes in, and that's a $1 refit job.

I'm sorry, but I think everyone making that excuse should have to say "I confuse mini-bux with quarters because I'm not as smart as a six-year-old, who can tell the difference between a cent and a dime." I'm really tired of that lame excuse, when no one confuses cents and dimes or $10 and $100. If you're in that big of a hurry, slow down before you have a heart attack.

Why not a shaped coin and a bi metal coin in line with the Canadian coins . Simple, should stop the confusion with the simple minded
