OK, they were fakes. Good the potential victim wrote down the license plate!

Quote:
The owner of the Amherst jewelry store at which Jenkins and Hill both allegedly attempted to sell counterfeit Seated Liberty, Morgan and Peace dollars for $10 each at around 1:30 p.m. March 27, turned down their offer, Leising said. As Jenkins and Hill drove away, the jewelry store owner took down the license plate number of the rental car in which they were riding and alerted authorities, Leising said.

Jenkins and Hill were arrested a short time later. A search of their rented 2012 Cadillac SRX revealed more than 200 counterfeit silver dollars, many of them bearing the CC Mint mark for the Carson City Mint. Also found in the vehicle were counterfeit gold jewelry and 100 counterfeit gold Kingdom of Saudi Arabia commemorative medals.

These crooks are no more "in our hobby" than a seller of stolen stereo equipment is an audiophile. Coins are simply the means for them to dishonestly take money from someone else.

Good they were caught, the last thing we need is to lose young collectors because they got cheated or burned.

And unfortunately counterfeit peddlers are on the rise. A local inexperienced cash for gold place got hit with bogus silver dollars in a variety of types only they paid about 20% off of their apparent FMV. They thought they had a bargain when the seller disappeared and they were stuck with the fakes.

Well... "stuck" until I came by. :-)

Glad to hear they finally got caught. They had multiple warrants out for their arrest in various states too. I hope they don't get out that soon, but you know once they do, they will be back at it again.

Shows how clueless these counterfeiters are, since an authentic coin like that has well more than $10 of silver in each.
Rest in Peace

More likely "dumb like a fox". A disreputable dealer might figure that they stole them, Coinstar won't take them, and a bank would ask questions, so ten bucks is better than being caught with them.
