I must say that is one of the nicest non-silver Bicentennial quarters I have ever seen, MS-66.

MS-65 is Q David Bowers' "Optimum Collecting Grade", a concept I disagree with... this coin is not MS-65. Any more takers?

I'll bite a MS66, even then it might be undergraded

MS-67. This coin has 99% of the reverse drum detail. I write about this coin in my weekly CoinWeek.com column which will be posted tomorrow. I think there are handful of certified MS-68s, this is one of maybe 200 MS-67s. Based on my observations, the typical well struck Washington 1976-D will range between MS-64 and MS-65 with the really nice ones hitting MS-66. Nothing in all of my rolls of 1976s comes close to this fella.

I know this thread is a month old but just have to add this post. Having just read the sticky on grading (top of this forum) and used the grading rules found at this link I got from the sticky: http://www.coingrading.com/grade1.htmlI'm a total novice but...I came up with MS67 using those rules. I'm impressed with the simplicity of the rules. I was a bit shocked by the MS67 and was anticipating that it would turn out too high, however it matched PCGS. For me, even getting close is an important break through. Anyway, I had to add this for any other beginners looking for any sort of grading help. Try out the link.

I dont get this one. I was way off this time, which sucks cause I was doing pretty good for awhile. All those marks on the reverse... tons of them, plus the ones the ones on the obverse (neck area)... regardless of their origin, how can this coin get MS65 with that many very obvious/heavy marks?
I see that the detail is high but I thought markings detracted from the grade.

That is pretty amazing it got graded as an MS-67. Looks like Machine Doubling on EPU?
