Front Facing Roman Coin, Caracalla - Coin Community Forum

Found this Roman coin in my garden last week, it is a Caracalla and is front facing. Museum said they had never heard of a front facing coin before but did say the coin was genuine. This style of the portraiture is not found on ancient Roman coins. I am curious about the other side. What IS on the other side? If it was found in Scotland, one wonders if it may have something to do with the Jacobites, hence my curiosity about the other side. Report this Post to the Staff

It says the name Caracalla and also you can make put fragments of Marcus Aurelius and Augustus....the staff at the museum picked up on the Augustus part of it. They said it ties in with late Roman but they couldnt find anything anywhere about this specific coin. Report this Post to the Staff

This is nowhere close to the style used by any Roman and the fabric is nothing like any period of ancient. There is no coin of Caracalla that has that name on the coin. I suspect this is part of a collectable medal set honoring Roman emperors. Perhaps it was a premium from a 19th century (at the earliest?) giveaway? Report this Post to the Staff
echizento Moderator United States 23731 Posts	Posted 04/10/2012 6:00 pm to the community While forward facing coins of Roman emperors where struck in the late Roman period, no forward facing coins where ever struck depicting Caracalla. The design of your coin looks modern and is not and ancient ancient Roman coin. What does the reverse look like? Report this Post to the Staff
