Well, I jumped in both feet forward and have purchased my first Greek coin. I hope I did OK on this one. I feel like such a newby. Black Sea, APOLLONIA PONTICA. . Circa 450-400 BC. Silver Drachm. (14-15 mm.; 3.13 gm). Obverse: Gorgoneian facing with snakes for hair and a protruding tongue. Reverse: An anchor flanked by letter A and a crayfish, which represents the minting city of Apollonia, the major fifth century BC Greek colony on the west coast of the Black Sea, modern Sozopol in Bulgaria. Reference: BMC IX, Black Sea 150-151 I'm curious. What do you think this particular coin should have sold for? Don't look to see what I paid. Just what is the value?

Yours has some really nice details! The prices on these are all over the map, but based on what I paid, I'd say yours would be priced at $70+ by dealers.

Obviously your asking people who know about these things, but knowing you JW, I would say less than $100?

Congrats on taking the plunges into Greek coins, I haven't got the nerve to do it yet. This is a very nice coin, and knowing your knack for the good deal I would say you paid Between $75-$90.

Well, then perhaps I did OK. I paid $62.50 for the coin. A little less than what most of you thought. Thanks for all the kind remarks. Now I have to figure out how to attribute these beauties. This one came fully attributed, but I would like to have the knowledge to look these things up to at least verify the seller's information.

Thanks Steve--the info I have has come slowly from research--Google helps me out a lot! My fake-finding is basically a time-consuming search for matches--anyone who's buying coins should try it.

Nice buy JW. I AM NOT SURPRISED! .... at the price! You do so well in that area. Did you do an offer or was that the original price?

Quote: Did you do an offer or was that the original price? It was an auction. I set my limit and actually got it under that amount. So I am pleased. This with the Cherronesos Hemidrachm set me back nearly $100, but I now have my first Greek coins.
