Jessvc1 and his women coins thread gave me the idea for this thread: to post any coins (or just your best ones) of Roman usurpers you have. I'll start. My only three: Magnentius (350-353 AD, against Constantius II)  Procopius (365-366 AD, against Valens and Valentinian I)  Magnus Maximus (383-388 AD, against Valentinian II and Theodosius I)  Edited by VisigothKing

Here is my Antoninianus of Postumus. He usurped power from Gallienus in 260 and formed the so-called Gallic Empire. He was recognised in Gaul, Germania, Britannia and Iberia until his murder in 269.  |

Macrianuns Minor, his brother (Quietus) and his father (Macrianus Major) were an interesting bunch. Mac. Major had a deformed leg so would not have been able to be an emperor himself. Thanks bobby. Very nice coins guys! The Postumus sure looks like a shiny one, and I really like the bust on your Magnentius bobby. And interesting history you provided there. Man these guys will find any way and any excuse to get on the throne huh! Magnus Maximus's history is pretty interesting as well. He won the support of his troops in Britain and crossed into Gaul and ended up killing Gratian, then took over the Western empire. Lets start an argument: Define Usurper. If you say someone who declared himself emperor we will have to include Augustus, Septimius Severus and several other major players. Perhaps we have to say ....and lost?

Yeah basically, the unsuccessful ones that don't go on lists of legitimate and recognized emperors that include Augustus, etc.

Great links Valiant! I was un-aware of a lot of that interesting info relating to MM  . If you dont know already have a look at the Roman King Arthur theories, again interesting and certainly as plausible as any of the other theories relating to the subject. Its great to see links to the people on our coins in our cultures today. As far as defining 'Usurper' its not easy, if possible at all! It reminds me of the often tedious hair-splitting of 'Un-official', Semi-official, Official, Counterfeit, Fake debate. All I will say is that those who were ultimately unsuccessful in their attempts to gain power are often painted as 'usurpers' whereas these who were successful are shown as heroic liberators. History is always written by the victors so I guess this is not a surprise. This is the best rule I can think of as a way of determining a 'usurper'? |

WOW there are some nice coins on this thread. I really like the magnentius coins and there are some nice postumus coins too. Thats a really nice Macrianus Minor bobbyhemlet. I dont have much for rarity or high grade in this department but here is one of mine. I posted this one before but its become a favorite of mine.  |
