I have been pounding out the details and getting things ready for launch and today is the day! Aside for my collaborators, you are the first people to see this.

I have combined my love of history and coins into a way to get people involved by offering them a piece of history in the form of a penny. Each penny is placed in a plastic sleeve which also contains a picture of an historical event from the past 100 years that took place the same year the penny was minted.

Here is a photo of what it looks like:

Here are the links to the project website and its Facebook page:

Any suggestions to help make this project better are always welcome!

Keeping with horrible events, I suppose there will be one of the Saint Valentine's Day Massagre in Chicago.
Here is an idea. Why not make a coin with a past President's face on the Obverse?
Or even coins with all of them and in a series.
Better yet, instead of the Penny dated the same as an event, why not make the coins depicting those events. We could name them something like Commemoratives.

What do you plan to do with these? Give them out at coin clubs and coin shows? Sell them? Who is your target audience? What will the person that receives one of these combo items do with it? Will he collect them as a set? Will he pull the Lincoln and trash the rest? What do you want him or her to do with it?

I have some ideas for improvements but I'd like to know where you're coming from first.

I'm looking to get them out various ways. I am sending some to Dave for the Philly show, I have a coin dealer who will have some at his booth at the upcoming flea market locally, I'm working on getting them into the local school's history classroom, pretty much anywhere they would fit in.

As far as the content of the photos, right now I'm using major events kids are likely to know about to get them interested. I also have space race themed, and a few zoological themed as well. Of course I'm always open to ideas. My daughter suggested some numismatic themes as well, such as the last year the penny was made completely out of copper and so on.

I talked to my bank's head teller and he is interested. When I get a chance I'll talk with him and see he can help me get permission to set up a display in the branch, or even have it as another item to choose from beside the sucker bowl.
