My rant. Population of the town I live in is 25K +/-. NO coin shop, so, two pawn shops are the only thing in town.
They have several sealed boxes of 2 roll nickel sets from the U.S. Mint. I inquired to buy a box today...$30. Um...no. Their reply, well, someday I will price everything. I would have to look that up to be sure though.
Never figured out how any retail business can have items on the shelf without being priced.

Lol...sounds pathetic. I live in a town that doesn't have a coin shop as well. There are many pawn shops. They are never helpful or nice when it comes to my coin needs lol. I just stick to ebay snipes and craigslist.

same here, we have no coin shops anywhere around here either. WE do have one I know of in Charlotte NC (if you can really call it a coin shop, more like they deal in coins) but they only deal in upper end coins, Rolex watches and the like

Best save your money and attend a regional or national coin show, where you can shop around for the best deals that meets your budget. You can build relationships with certain dealers that will bring the rolls & coins you want if they know you are coming. Brick and mortar coin stores are really a thing of the past, as many of them have odd hours or are rarely ever open or only deal in PMs and know hardly anything about coins. As for pawn shops, they mostly have no idea of the value of the coins they buy, so it's usually a waste of time to ask.

How does somebody find out about any coin shows that will be happening? I want to attend one but I don't know of any here in Maryland.

I used to attend the show that was held in a hotel in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, but it only had about 40 tables. Check the calendar of a publication like Coin World for a listing of shows and dates, and the cost of admissions, if any. I only know of the big ANA yearly show this year happening during the first week of August at the Convention Center in Phiiladelphia.

Interesting thread .. Maybe when I get old .. I would like to move to one of your areas .. and open a coin shop. For me it is hard to think of not being near one. I do agree with the op .. not sure how you can have a business and not be able to set a price for a item on display. Quote: WE do have one I know of in Charlotte NC (if you can really call it a coin shop, more like they deal in coins) My daughter lives near Charlotte NC, when I visit, she takes me to a coin shop that is in either Monroe or Matthews. That shop had nice coins every time I have been there. Quote: How does somebody find out about any coin shows that will be happening? I want to attend one but I don't know of any here in Maryland. I was stationed in the Wash DC area for over 10 years. When I was there it seemed like there was a coin show at least every month. In the Northern Virginia, Wash Dc to Baltimore area. Try searching online for coin shows .. or find local coin shops and ask where there are.

West of me, Denver - about a 4 hour drive, not counting weather. Our daughter does live in Colorado Springs. On our last trip there, I lucked out and found Hallenbeck's coin shop (they actually have two). VERY nice coin shop.
To the east of me, 100 miles, a nice little coin shop in the mall. Kind of a cluster in there though. Not sure how the guy makes any money. Another 100 miles, another coin shop. Only been there once...again, kind of a cluster.

This link takes you the calendar of the Maryland State Numismatic Association It indicates shows in Baltimore, New Market, Towson, Westminster, and Annapolis. I don't know if any of those are close to you. you might also check for State Numismatic Societies or Associations in adjoining states. http://mdstatenumisassn.org/MSNA/na...ional-shows/

Maybe you could open a coin shop! There's a coin shop in a little town nearby, and they're always busy, always buying and selling gold and silver. Buy a little below spot and sell a little above. Making money on both ends. Seems like a no brainer. Jewelry, coins, bullion. Maybe something to think about.

I live in small town of 8,000 and we have one coinshop. Actually, it's a another business, and the guy who owns it is a collector / dealer. So he has a small area dedicated to coins.
There's no prices on anything in there, so you have to ask. He's a pretty good guy. I usually buy my bullion eagles there and a few other things. His premium over spot is high, but it works out about the same .vs buying online and paying shipping.
He pays spot price for silver, so I can't complain.
