I don't shop for coins at the coin dealer, unless I see a pick.
The last pawn shop I went to, they had 3 rolls of copper cents in the case. I asked how much?
'Dem been there so long... Buck 'fitty.
One was a roll of 60 small date, the other two wheats. They were even marked as such on the rolls. Your best pickups will not be at your local coin dealer anyway, so keep that in mind.

I forget at times how many live in places like where I came from. Actually most here have mentioned their towns as 10 times bigger than mine was when I was a kid. And my wife too came from a place where everyone withing a hundred miles knew everything you did. Now just the opposite. Several coin shows within 15 miles of me, every Month, all year long. Way to many coin stores, hobby stores and pawn shops all over the place. I've mentioned this on other posts. To find coin shows, don't just use one source. I found a long time ago that if I did that I'd miss about 1/3 of all coin shows. And don't just look up coin shows, also check for coin clubs. Many are small and have coin shows but not enough resources to advertise sufficiently. And once you find a dealer, also ask them if they know of any coin shows in your area.

Drsandman2 - you are so right.
I like going to pawn shops in towns/cities with populations above 50K and under 100K. Big enough to have several different private owner pawn shops, but not big enough for the chain pawn shops.

My local pawn shop keeps a few replicas on the same shelf as their real coins and prices them ~10% below the real coins. If I point it out they're good about putting them in their "replica section" while I'm there at least.

Pawn shops are great places to get items like ASE comm set for small premium over spot price heck I just picked up the Maple leaf 10 year set for spot price.

Quote: How does somebody find out about any coin shows that will be happening? I want to attend one but I don't know of any here in Maryland. The Numismatic News publishes coin shows all over the USA every week, listed by state. It lists 3 in MD now: 2-12 Salisbury 2-15 Westminster 2-22 to 25 - Baltimore This lists 2 weeks at a time: http://numismaster.com/ta/inside_nu...howsCalendar

Get some cash together and consider setting up your own local buy place, otherwise the other one place in town gets everything that comes in. Also, if he's fair, you can send people to him as well, and make sure everyone gets treated right. Probably easier said than done..
SO, I try to find other avenues, yeah I hit the pawn shop as well, just can't handle the prices at the lcs when someone else can beat em.

I have never thought of shopping at a pawn shop for coins, but do they really have good deals? I always see them as shady areas with stolen goods, like movies from years ago showed them. I imagine it could be worthwhile to cherrypick them, since they might not know what they really have.

As to pawn shops in my area, not a good place to try to find coins. Not a good place to find anything. We have so many of them too and it is amazing at how many really don't want your buisness. A few by me are seldom open and when open, usually tell me they are just closing or just opening so can't do buisness now. I've had many just sort of look me over and tell me to go away. a freind of mine deals with cameras and sells them at camera shows. He purchased a few at a pawn shop and ended up arrested for attempting to sell stolen items. One pawn shop near me will buy things but sells nothing. Around where I live there are restaurants that are never open, little stores that too are never open. They have been there for a long, long time and never open. AAAHhhhhhhhhh the fun of living in a really large corrupt city. Today on the news they stated that the crime rate here is down 20%. Unfortunately the Murder rate is way up? See in a large city Murder is not a crime.

Sometimes a pawn shop can be good they are more miss than hit though. For coin shows around the country I use this link and pretty obvious too; http://coinshows.com/scroll down to pick your state and see what's coming up and when.
