I have the same question. People talk about the "melt value" of coins, but I always heard it was illegal to deface or damage U.S. Currency. I have buffaloe's with no date and a few walking liberties with holes and or no dates and I have no idea what to do with them.

Buffalo's have no melt value they are not silver,, but there is a niche market for them ,, put them on ebay they go for 20 to 30 cents each. the silver can be sold as bullion. Metalman

Thanks for the info, Metalman. One more question- if I put them on ebay is it best to do all of them in one big lot or split them up? I don't know if people like lots of those or just a few at a time.

I would put them all together ,, but I'm finding out I need some teaching on ebay as a whole,, but most the folks who buy these use them for crafts, buttons, leather work , and such things so I think they are morte interested in lots than in a few here and there. Metalman

I opened this thread thinking someone was about to ask about bringing up the dates on coins which have the number wore off. Thank goodness that is not the case and the smart decision will be made if you follow Metalman's advice.

Mary, If you put some of those nickles or dimes in the sell portion of the forum, I would make you an offer. Ty
Also, you can auction them off right here on the forum, also. No fees, pluss all the good old folks here find it quite amusing.

Of course they have melt value! The base metal (copper and nickel) in a roll (40) of nickels is currently worth $2.71. A roll (50) of copper cents currently melts for $0.82. It is currently illegal to melt either. As others have pointed out, a market exists for dateless Buffs--12 to 25 cents @ is what I have observed. Offer them in quantity or shipping will kill you.

A few other suggestions are to check if there are any Craft type organizations in your area. They would normally buy coins with no dates for lots of their items. Then if you type in Coin Shows and your state in a Google or Yahoo search you may find a coin show near you and there are usually dealers that will buy them for the same reason, to sell to craft groups. Coin shows are also fun and you wouldn't have to get involved with ebay. If any flea markets in the area, check them out for coin dealers that may want them for the same reason. One thing I've done with lots of them is give them to little kids that are just getting interested in coin collecting. They appreciate them more than you think.
