Choice XF with questionable color. My gut says it's a possible retone job.

there were no problems noted on the holder just to let everyone know so it wasn't net graded

Strictly by the reverse I would think it is very high EF. You say it is not net graded per say, but I think the reverse to be much "cleaner" and easier to grade. Probably because I can't tell what is wear on the obverse, especially considering the hairlines.
Regardless, I say a very stong EF. My grading skills have been clearly documented thus far as really stinking though...lolol

wow I can't believe you are all grading this so much lower than ANACS did, maybe its the photograph but its actually pretty well graded or atleast seems to be to me. ANACS graded this one AU-53

Sorry Bryan, It might be the lighting for the photo of the obverse. It just looked like there was some wear at the high spots of the hair.

I thought I would reply before reading all the other posts. That is a beautiful coin Brian. I think it is an EF-40. I love all the old coppers.

AU-53 huh? Well I can see that. It certainly looks like some mint luster is left. I just thought there was too much wear of the hair lines to make an AU. At any rate it is a rare coin in that kind of condition and it doen't look retoned to me.

In looking at Photograde, hindsight definitely calls the reverse to be AU. But from the description for the obverse, it's hard to tell concerning the hair lines. Mind you, I didn't go onto other sites to reference other pieces to see what "full hair" actually was....Sorry Bryan, but very high XF is close to AU...lololol.

Bryan, if those colors are the true colors of the coin, I'm suspect. You might want to ask some copper experts on the NGC and PCGS boards. Maybe I'm totally off my rocker on this, but that coloration just looks a bit off. I've shown a coin with no copper color remaining in it to a couple of copper dealers and they believed the coin to be retoned. So, it's easy to be fooled even by coins that look somewhat natural. Hey, I've been wrong before and perhaps I'm wrong on this one.

I think the color is okay. I've seen a ton of old "original" copper that is similar looking. But as to the grade, no way is that one AU. Too much wear on the hair to make AU. I'd go with EF-45.
The photos might be misleading, so they may make it look like there's more wear that it looks in-hand.

I was going to make my first grading stab at the EF43 or 44 overall . the reverse is AU or really close but the obverse is XF40. That is however the opinion of a very amateur amateur.
