Rats-Of-Tobruk---71-Years-OnAn extremely limited number of Tobruk coins from our Famous Australian Battles series now remain available direct from The Perth Mint.

The 2011 coin coincided with the 70th anniversary of the famous WWII conflict, which commenced in April 1941.

Australian soldiers made up more than half of the Allied presence garrisoned in the crucial Libyan port. When German propagandist Lord Haw Haw derided the tenacious defenders as ‘rats in a trap', the diggers embraced the name ‘Rats of Tobruk' as a badge of honour.

A further year down the track, we re-play this Ten News tribute (first shown April 2011) featuring the proud ‘Rats' who withstood tank attacks, artillery barrages and dive-bombers in defence of Tobruk for eight long months.

Their deeds have become legendary and their nickname part of our language.

Tobruk certainly was a major event, and The Rats deserve our thanks, so I will repeat my usual rant - a circulating coin ought to be issued.

far more noteworthy that taxation for example, These would look great on a 20 or 50 cent planchet
Imagine if the mint produced a NCLT coin celebrating taxation, No one would buy it.
