Friend received an offer of antoninianus coins, they look authentic to me but some colleagues are arguing opposite.

Your opinion?

It's hard to tell from your photo plus we would need to see the reverse of each coin. Just from first glance, I would be suspicious of these coins. There are too many that seem to be well struck and centered. That alone is not enough to condemn the coins as fakes, but it does make one suspicious.

Yes, I'm also suspicious of extremely good looking coins, but on the other hand it is a lot consisting of around hundred coins, and there are almost no same coins, to make hundred different fakes is quite a feature.

You might be surprised. I have at least two Antoninianus that are mules (wrong reverse for the obverse) that look very much like the coins in your image. Well struck and centered. Here is one with a Philip I obverse and a reverse from a Gordian III Antoninianus:

Authentic-Antoninianus?

I guess my bottom line here is I would want to examine each coin separately before making a judgement, especially if I were considering purchasing the lot.

We need to see closer pictures of each coin and their reverses. I agree with JW, they just look too good.

After raising some questions, my friend received pictures of coins in original condition, so I guess this topic can be concluded:

The coins were heavily cleaned, which wasn't wise decision probably.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

For myself it is not the fact that they are in good shape that makes them suspect. I see (and own) lots of 3rd century ants like this that are in choice condition. What strikes me as kind of odd is they are all in pretty much identical condition. Other than that they look alright to me.

According to the seller, these coins were recently discovered, hundreds of them, on the second picture you can see the original condition of the coins, before the cleaning. That could explain the uniform condition of the coins.

Did they all come from a hoard from which you can trace them all back to?

If not, where DID they come from?

I am always big on provenance.

According to the seller there was one big hoard of over 500 coins, but it seems that the really rare coins are already sold, this lot has around 100 coins with the better ones on the pictures.

The next step is to see if the seller's comments check out OK.
