Hi, Apologize but I'm not an expert and I'm new. I Have received by my father in 1988 5 polymer notes with AB 33 968 301 to AB 33 968 305. When he gave them to me he told me that they were about to be withdraw as they had a defect. I have never touched them and I would like to know if they have any value. Thanks, Carlo

Yes they are 1st issue LAST PREFIX notes & you are sitting on a small fortune there, your father obviously had the knowledge & foresight to keep these, well done.
My 2010 Macca's has them at $2450 in 2010,just remember catalogue value is'nt what you will actually get but these notes are rare as rocking horse droppings in Uncirculated condition.

Carlo to CCF. You have hit the jackpot with your five $10 Bicentennial Commemorative notes, enworb was spot on, each note is worth $2,200 individually in uncirculated condition. However, you have 5 consecutive last prefix notes which in my opinion, when sold together are worth much more than $11,000. I recall reading something about them being recalled as well, it had to do with the thin smooth varnish which come off under normal wear and tear which caused the note to age prematurely. The second issue solved this by having a thicker mottled varnish applied.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I actually was quite young when he gave the notes to me and I've kept them one by one in a specific plastic cover. I forgot about them until 2 or 3 years ago when I moved from Rome to Milano.

I hope that plastic isn't PVC (polyvinyl chloride) based as banknote albums using PVC sleeves have been known to damage banknotes as well as coins by the leaching of acidic plasticizers when used for long term storage. Valuable numismatic items should be stored in inert substances such as Mylar or polypropylene.

You are sitting on a gold mine...I really don't know too much about this commemerative note. All I know is that it's highly wanted. It's something that people love to collect. I'm not sure how many were released into circulation, but I have a couple that were part of circulation. I know that a huge percentage of the population don't even know that it was legal Australian tender. That link above from in2fish is a fantastic source of info, regarding the commemrative note. Finally a polymer question I can't answer...I say polymers began in 1992! Maybe we can still consider the 1988 commerative to be a sample/test polymer note to surprise & amaze the world with its amazing technology & security features...imagine if it was a total failure (we probaly wouldn't know about it). I'm interested in knowing the full story of the discovery of the note & the plant.

Very interesting thread
I remember when they first came out I put one aside
I didnt really collect notes at the time and $10 was a bit of a chunk out of the salary
Have just had a look at my note and the serial number is AB20454808
So where does it fit into the scheme of things? I am pretty sure it doesn't have any real value

Huckles; As SPG pointed out, there were two releases of this note. The first release is identified by the 3rd and 4th serial number. The first release serial numbers are 93,94 or 96 only. Your 3rd and 4th serial numbers are 45 - which makes this second release. First prefix is AB10, last is AB57. So you're in the middle. Uncirculated note catalogues $65, you could pick them up for $30 on ebay.
