Hello All, Haven't been on in a while. Miss everyone! Hope everyone's well. I'm looking at a Carson City Morgan on Ebay Its in a GSA holder, while inspecting the coin up close. I noticed the GSA Holder Say's "Not an NGC Holder" But Its an NGC Grade. Were these coins graded bye NGC but slabbed bye GSA, thats why it says its not an NGC Holder. I've never noticed this before, but then again I don't really look at the GSA's due to the price's associated with =<MS-65. Thanks for your time, I tried doing a search for GSA Holders on CCF before posting this, so some leg work was attempted. Plus I really wanted to say Hi! :%}

NGC will grade the coin while not removing it from the GSA holder. They put some kind of band around the original holder, if I remember correctly. Some people just want a third-party opinion, and this is NGC's answer.
Hello back at you!

The large black holders are GSA(Government Services Administration) holders, that was the government entity that originally distributed the Morgans in the 1970s. Every grading company except NGC will crack a Morgan out of a GSA holder and put it in their own slab. Fortunately, NGC is helping to preserve that little bit of history by leaving the coin in the GSA holder and wrapping a blue adhesive grading band around the original holder.

I have a brown box Ike, same as GSA, that is graded by NGC with the blue band. It's MS-69 (?70) if I could locate it.....

Thanks! I saw that "NOT AN NGC HOLDER" wanted to be sure, I'm always watching for the slide of hand. lol Especially now that the fake holders are becoming so easy to get. The GSA holders are from bank hoards that were packaged and sold to the public through the government? Government Services Administration..... And is there some banks that buyers will look for, cause the coins from that bank tend to grade well. Sorry for all the questions..... Going to have to start looking further into this. I how I wish I were alive to jump on these when they came out. I get this feeling for anything Pre 1979 LOL Well I should say Pre 1985 cause It wouldn't do any good to be alive at the time, but not old enough to understand the value. 15 might of given me a chance..... lol

Quote: The GSA holders are from bank hoards that were packaged and sold to the public through the government?
The source of the GSA hoard was not a bank vault, it was the silver sitting in Treasury vaults that was previously backing silver certificates. The Treasury vaults had a "first in, last out" policy so many of the CC dollars that were shipped to Treasury vaults in the late 1800s just sat in bags for decades.

Slabbed by GSA, graded while in the holder by NGC but since they could not examine the coin in hand and since it is not in one of their holders, it is not covered by their grade guarantee. Quote: Every grading company except NGC will crack a Morgan out of a GSA holder and put it in their own slab. ANACS also grades them in the GSA holders now. If your looking for an MS-65 coin, I would say buy one that is slabbed by NGC/PCGS/ANACS and NOT in an original GSA slab. I only say this because the GSA slabbed coins that are graded by NGC/ANACS are technically not guaranteed by them. I'm sure no one would really question it, but for MS-65 prices I would just buy one in a regular NGC/PCGS/ANACS slab. If you want an MS-64 coin, then definitely get a GSA slabbed one, there really nice. (I have several and will always keep them in the original GSA slab)
My opinion, hope it make some sense :)

I would disagree in a polite way with Cali Nick. If you want a great CC dollar, graded MS65 by a TPG I woud find a GSA dollar in the original packaging with all the original certificates and graded by NGC with the wrap around band. Now that is a great coin. All that history wrapped up in a single coin.

I was just theorizing about the possible effect on value due to the ANACS/NGC non-guarantee on GSA slabbed coins(MS-65 and higher only). It probably is not even an issue. Dont get me wrong, I want one. I definitely agree that a GSA Carson city graded MS-65 by NGC is an awesome thing :)
