I'm working on my Peace dollar set and have been looking at this coin. I knew it is a conditional rarity from reading RedBook, but why? Is it a problem with poor dies, especially reverse die; or is the 34-s subject to be more circulated than most of the remainder of the series for some reason?
The stuff on ebay is mostly junk, lots of folks trying to capitalize on the rarity by cleaning (and sometimes polishing)and pawning them off as original. This coin could prove to be a difficult task to obtain in decent shape without spending a lot.

Most were released into circulation after minting. So, MS 1934-S isn't always easy to find. There's nothing that I know of in regards to striking problems. I wouldn't buy one below Extra Fine grade because of poor resale.

... anything worth having in MS63 will cost you $2500 ... and in average AU this is a $400 coin.

The Peace dollar series has many condition rarities ... but most of the huge jumps in price occur between MS64 and MS65 ... think 1925-S ... $900 in MS64 and $21,000 in MS65.

The 1934-S Peace dollar is the only coin in the series priced over $1000 in MS60 ... a strange situation given the 1 million coins minted ... but with few MS survivors.

Let us know how the search goes for you.

I have about 15 of these so far and have spent under $40 each for all.
Most are EF-AU, with an Unc or 2 thrown in the mix.I knew the '21 and '28 would cost
but 34-s was a surprise, now I'm hoping I can find a "under appreciated" coin for about $100.
Lots of luck-
