I ran across this one on ebay and was wondering what ms65w meant.

I also noticed that the barcode and number were reversed from the other slabs I have looked at. Is this a ngc slab? Not much on slabs but was just curious.

At first, I didnt think it looked right either. I then checked sampleslabs.com- a great reference site for old to new holders by TPG.

It appears to be NGC version 16, dating from 1999-2000.

I am not sure on the meaning of the "W", I would guess that it means White i.e. not toned.

for a very short time NGC used the W and T designations for White and Topned coines. I think it only lasted a few months and they did away with it

Thanks Bryan and Biokemist for the info. First slab I have seen with that configuration didn't know what to think of it. As for the W and T guess they figured it out that we can look at it and see if its toned or not. That sampleslabs site will be a big help. I have ran across a few questionable ones and after looking at that site they were probably legit. Didn't know there where that many different ones. Thanks

Sorry I haven't been around to answer that one. That is actually a slightly scarce slab. It is listed in the slabbook and on this PCGS forum thread http:// *** Invalid Link ***&threadid=220185&STARTPAGE=1as NGC 8. This slab style was only used from July 1st to Mid August of 2000, about 6 weeks. The tiny serial number under the barcode was not popular and in mid-August they switched back to the NGC 7 type slab which continued for another year.

NGC used the W (white) and T (toned) designations for only a short period, less than six months I believe. They introduced the * designation at the same time and that was accepted and is still in use. I believe the * designation will transfer if the coin is reholdered, but the W and T designations will not. So over time the W & T slabs will become scarcer and scarcer. That one with both a W and on an NGC 8 is scarcer than even a regular NGC 8 slab. At this point though they still do not command a premium for the holder. That may change at some point in the future. (There is some evidence that interest in the slabs themselves is increasing.)
