Where did this come from? http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-LTD-ED...em1c261208edAt first I thought someone just made up this set but the shopping channel had it listed at 89.95. This is the description on their website: This limited edition 2012 one ounce silver coin is part of a Royal Canadian Mint series celebrating Canada's wildlife. The main design features an image of a cougar poised with its front paws on a branch, with an effigy of Queen Elizabeth on the obverse. The coin is struck in .9999 fine silver, and has a brilliant "numismatic uncirculated" finish. The nominal face value is $5. This premium collector presentation includes the cougar pure silver coin and two mint condition cougar postage stamps set in a high quality wood case, embossed with "Canada". Very odd. It appears to be like the other coin and stamps issued from 2004-2006 except that it's missing an outer sleeve. Same wooden box for sure. It's like someone just made their own? I don't think this is an RCM or Canada Post product, though it looks like it could be.

I bought 3 off the shopping channel for $69.99 they sold out fast then they came back at 89.95.There is no booklet inside it is just a picture of a cougar the coin is just a bullion coin and the stamps are only about 12 cents in a nice box.I was not happy with it so I sold all 3 sets. I think there was a mintage of only 300 if I remember correctly.

You're correct. The seller says there are only 300 sets (not really a mintage) but I'm still curious as to who made the sets. It looks like they are trying to "imitate" the RCM sets and I'm a little surprised that the shopping channel would have participated in that. Guess they'll be selling knock off Gucci swag soon.

I really like the RCM sets, so kinda disappointed that this wasn't legit, but pretty predictable. Also CC-Ottawa alot of shopping networks sell knock offs/non-legit stuff so it doesn't shock me. :P

I would not be so quick to dismiss the set as a fabrication. The possibility exists that this may indeed be a legitimate set from the Royal Canada Mint.

Very astute observation Amaths. I am leaning more towards the illegitimacy of the set; however, I am interested in what the RCM has to say about this matter. It may be unfortunate for the Shopping Channel if the organization is found selling versions of Canadian coin sets in a fashion that mimics the RCM's products. It will make me second guess any purchases from them in future.

Someone jury-rigged their own, eh? Pretty devious. No laws broken, either. And it would be fairly easy to do. All the base materials are readily available. If one doesn't want to use the old boxes from the 2004-2007 sets, they could always be outsourced without much hassle.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...until it's copyright infringement (or at best deceptive marketing). If the buyers of this product understand that it's not from the RCM, I suppose it's on them, but if they believe this is part of the 9 piece coin and stamp RCM issued collection, then there is a problem. How far can we go with this? Maybe buy up a bunch of lady bug painted quarters and glue on a red jelly bean with some black dots? Instant profit.

odd... One tell-tale sign though is the lack of an outer sleeve bearing the RCM and Canada Post logos + serial number

^Bromberg represents The Shopping Channel and Canadian Coin and Currency. He also now officially represents the Royal Canadian Mint, although he was already selling their stuff with The Shopping Channel. These coin sets were most likely made or sourced out by Canadian Coin and Currency. They are very intelligent sellers. They do an amazing job of putting coin sets together and selling them at premiums. I don't buy anything from them at those prices, but they give me lots of ideas for collections. Of course, the Mint has no issues with this. In fact, they like this. Bromberg is now selling mostly RCM stuff with The Shopping Channel, so its bonus for the Mint. Which is too bad because I miss watching some of his ancient collections.

I too like watching the coin show...their easy payment plan is handy for buying the more costly gold or kilo coins.. Last weekend they sold 250 coins of the new maple and crystal....mine from the mint doesn't even ship till early May...
