I ordered and received the RCM 2012 Proof set and I'm curious about what seems to be an error in the gold plating on the $2 coin. I haven't figured out how to take a good photo of the coin but I can describe what I am seeing fairly easily.

The gold plating is on the inner core - the central round area. There is a small raised lip around this as a boundary between that area and the outer ring. The gold plating is offset slightly so that on the left side the plating extends onto the lip, and on the right side it is mostly not on the lip. I have looked through a magnifier at all the coins in the set and this is the only one where the plating seems to be "sloppy". Even the finest details on the $1 commemorative coin are gold plated well - there is no offset. The $2 coin has this problem on both sides of the coin and it is more pronounced on the obverse.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this and if it is something to be excited about.

I finally got around to getting some photos to show.

1. points to a spot where the plating completely covers the lip
2. points to a spot where the plating covers only about half of the lip
3. points to a spot where the plating does not noticeably cover the lip at all

I still have questions: is this an error? Is it a common error? Others with this set, can you see the same problem?

The twoonie in my set has the same uneven plating 'feature'. Both sides.

Same with mine. Seems quite common. But I'd still buy it again.

Ditto. Not very noticeable on the reverse but quite strong on the obverse from about 4 to 12 o'clock.

Okay, so 4/4 so far :-) I find it strange since the other plating (other coins) is so well done.
