Mates, anyone picking up anything interesting at the Noble Auction? I just missed out on the goose dollars (both). Lots of sovereigns going for spot +/-10%.

What browser are you using Australian Coin, Internet Explore ? FireFox ? Google Chrome ?
I run IE as my default browser but some sites don't work so well on IE so I switch to FireFox ( eg : I find photobucket works better with FireFox but ebay works better with IE.

I bid on 6 items and ended up with nothing. The first two were war medals which were badly underestimated by Noble. One went for $3500 (est $1000) another went for $2500 (est $500). I was beaten out by postal bidders ( darn postals - I was the only floor bidder for the items). It annoys me how Noble grossly underestimates when they can get away with it, such as in war medals. They dont do it as much with coins as they cant get away with it as easily. I also lost out on some gold coins - I could afford to match the winning bid on each of them, but it just wasnt worth the price (auction fever is a killer).

Although I managed to drown my sorrows by picking up a Sydney Mint Sovereign from IS wright at a great price. I have been looking for ages to upgrade, but once you start looking for EF and higher, the price begins to skyrocket. So I guess I got lucky by missing out at Noble.

Auctions are the best way to buy coins - thats where the hunt is at its best. Even though I lost, I still enjoyed the whole auction experience.

Enoilgam, good stuff thanks for sharing. Was the auction floor crowded? What do you think were the hottest items? I am one of those pesky postal bids.

Everyone else. Question. If you had one Auction in Australia or Asia to go to. Which would it be?

" It annoys me how Noble grossly underestimates when they can get away with it, ..."
- it makes for good marketing. Low estimates gets the buyers along: the more, the merrier.
After the sale, sellers are pleased with the price received, and go away talking up the auction process.
When the auctioneer deals with prospective sellers, they point out how recent sales were way over the estimates, so the seller sees this as his most advantageous option.

Auctioneers love to say this: when you set a "for sale" price, the buyer only talks you down; but at an auction, all the buyers talk the price up.

Yeah, nothing much has changed there, large pinch of salt needed.I noticed on TV that Victoria(?) is bringing in legislation to stop this happening in Real Estate.
I was at an Auction a few years ago and the owner of the coin was sitting alongside me, bidding barely reached the estimate and it was knocked down to a postal bid that didn't exist, said owner was not happy with the whole process.

I guess thats true with the low estimates - I'm a relative rookie when it comes to auctions (this is my third time), so when I see the estimate I just assume that the item would roughly reach that price. But as I said before, Auctions are the best way to buy, much more fun.

Also JamieSpat, the floor is always pretty full, but its mostly quiet - postal bidders do most of the buying.
