Gentleman,

Was going through my coin boxes once again and in doing so I found a 1943 P Nickel that looked quite different then the rest. I noticed that it had no "copper under tone"... what I mean is that I always notice that on the War Nickels, especially in the more worn areas, the copper hue is showing through. Quite pronounced, this one had none that I could see though it does show wear.

I weighed it and it weighed in @ 4.7 grams. All of my other War Nickels came in @ 4.9 or 5.0 grams. No Copper? Planchet compositional error?

Any input? How could I explore this further?

The coin shown looks normal to me,maybe it was dipped. Can you post photos of the ones that have a copper hue look to them for comparison?

Alright, here are the comparison shots. I took the photos together (i.e. a regular looking one with the coin in question in the same picture, so the color differences can be observed and examined in the same color spectrum/hue as the other coin).

Regular looking coin is uptop in each case. That, what I call, "copper hue" is pronounced in the war time nickels that I have seen. However it is entirely absent in the one I posted here ... so it got me wondering if the metal composition was different on this coin then the regular ones.

Just toned. Both are silver nickels.

with coop. I have several high grade WWII silver nickels that have a copper / golden tone. In fact, you can see some really beautiful colors in the WWII nickel series.
