Is it really worth collecting these pennies? Will there be a good return on these pennies? I was given a jar and most of them seem to be copper. Same with the box of pennies I got in the states. Thanks

You know coincollect1 you can never tell. They say that the metal value of these coppers is at least twice their face value. I was in a coin shop yesterday and they were selling a bag of 5000 for $200 dollar. That works out to $.04 apiece. Not a bad return for the store just in face value.

I'd like to think that someday we all could cash in like that. However the way that I understand it is that now that the Canada has done away with their penny boxes of 2011 Canadian pennies are being sold a collector items for a fairly hefty price. If or when that happens in the U.S. I would expect the same to happen here. But who knows?

For the last ten years or so I've saved all wheat pennies just for the heck of it, and a year ago I started saving all coppers (pre-1982). I put them in tubes by decade. But I don't see myself saving every cent that comes my way, even if the U.S. does abandon the one-cent coin. That would just be too much.

However, where I used to save only Canadian pennies witht George VI (or previous) on them, starring last month when I heard the news, I started putting away all Canadian pennies.

Power of suggestion, probably.

i recently sold 2 boxes of copper cents pre82 on ebay for $86.00... I mean after fees and all its still around a $20 profit... since I love collecting and roll hunting, its fun. but if your in it just for the profit then doing what I do, how I do it, is like jumping over a dollar for a dime... but to me any profit is good, bc I can then turn that into a coin for my collection...

Look through them for valuable ones and then just sell the rest. Hoarding coins usually just isn't worth it. The same amount of profit from bulk coins is about the same as what you would get in a savings account. And no problems storing a bank book.
