I have a few bullion coins but am not well versed in them - what exactly is the "error" on this Coin?

Without looking at the auction I will guess that it is an overdate. Usually when you see two dates like that in the description that is what it is. In this case a 2008 over 2007.

Maybe, but the listing says 2008 Obverse, 2007 reverse

The "U" font in United States of America is the error. This coin appears to be a legitimate error coin. If you have a 2009 or later ASE, just compare the reverse to the auction photo. Pay specific attention to the serif on the lower right of the U... it should look like a reversed comma attached to the letter. However, it's missing. That's the error.

Please don't make your buying decision based on my comments. Others here on the forum can give you far more experienced advice that I can provide. Good luck!

Believe me, the listing price is way above my budget so no worries. I just didn't know this error existed and am wondering if it is worth the asking price.

I only read about this error last month while researching ASE's and other silver bullion coins. Here's the article, "American Silver Eagle Coins -- Why Bother Collecting Or Investing?"

A list of highly collectible American Silver Eagle coins (including your 2008 error coin) can be found mid-way down the page.

Worth the asking price? Hard for me to say since I intentionally avoid high premium bullion.

I did just check the 800 Pound Gorilla of numismatic auctions, Heritage Coins, to get some idea as to high-end pricing. What they call Early Release W-2008 American Silver Eagle graded NGC-70 have successfully sold for over $700.00 USD. Your mileage may vary.

Prices for the 2008-W Burnished Uncirculated Rev. of 2007 ASE...

Coin World Price values = $634.00 in MS69 and $1078.00 in MS70

The Coin Dealer (gray sheet) = BID $360.00 ~ ASK $390.00 (most dealers will offer between 80% and 95% of BID for this coin if you need cash quickly) and a Dealer will never pay full retail price for coins listed in retail price catalogs... Hope this helps should you feel the need to purchase one...
